How To Plug Guitar Into Computer

Direct recording is a great way to begin to record guitar at home as it essentially allows you to record guitar on computer without having to use expensive home recording equipment. This method of recording guitar basically involves plugging your guitar into some sort of interface or desktop unit that goes into the computer using a USB or Firewire cable.

From then on in, everything such as speaker simulation, amp modelling, eq’s, effects, compressors is entirely software based in some sort of audio program.

By plugging your guitar straight into an interface, you are removing the need to use an amplifier, and are therefore recording the guitar clean. Recording the guitar clean enables you to add effects later with plug-ins making it easy to edit, and chop and change. This is great when you want to record guitar at home as it can help keep the volume low. Keep reading...

Record Guitar At Home Using An Amplifier And Microphone

One of the most frequent questions I get asked is "how to plug guitar into computer "... well, there are a few different methods. The most hands on method being Indirect Recording. This is where you record your guitar using a microphone and an amplifier, and can sometimes be known as the “old school” method of recording guitar.

This involves actually plugging your instrument into an amplifier, and using a microphone to record the sound. Minimally this method requires an amplifier, microphone, mic-preamp and a converter. However, a whole heap of other units can be added, for example eq’s, mixers, compressors etc.

Recording indirectly can be a lot more complex than recording direct, and also a lot more expensive, which something you may need to consider when recording guitar at home, as you may need to work to budgets. Read more on indirectly recording guitar here...
