What Is A Converter?

In very basic terms the converter is the equipment that takes your analog audio from your compressor, eq unit, mic-preamp etc, and creates a digital representation, which is sent to, and is now useable with your computer. Keep in mind that this is one of the most important units in your signal chain and it’s well worth spending a little more money to get a high quality converter.

The reason for this is that if the digital representation is done by a low quality converter then it will be of a lower resolution. Whereas if the digital representation is done by a higher quality converter then it will have a higher resolution and will have more detail. This will result in you being able to hear higher highs, and lower lows in your sounds, ultimately creating a better overall quality of sound. For that reason alone it’s worth spending the right amount of money on a quality converter. Let’s take a look at some products and the features of each.
